Attending Shakeel Ali’s class is a unique experience apart from the “geek stuff” he teaches. He is a repository of many interesting & authentic facts about computer languages. I was lucky to have heard one of those interesting trivia on the rise and fall of Netscape Navigator.
Long long time ago there was a browser war. The whole world watched with gasping breath as Netscape Navigator kept releasing newer and better versions of the browser compared to the Internet Explorer of Microsoft. As years passed by Netscape invested heavily into the browser technology and had by then made it a paid software. Many multinational companies were its clients and the best minds in the browser industry worked with it.
Not able to see the decline of Internet Explorer, Microsoft came up with an idea to not only take over the top slot but also to put the Netscape Navigator “6 ft under the ground”. They took the advantage of being the most used OS and made their browser Internet Explorer free and available by default in all its versions of windows OS. This not only increased its usage but also made it popular. This drove the Netscape Navigator to bankruptcy and many people lost jobs.
The rest as they say is history, until another Browser by the name Firefox came and rewrote that History and future of Internet Explorer.
